This body of water is a home to a significant number of cottages and homes. The North (Muskoka) side of the river is entirely made up of water access cottages, whereas the South (North Simcoe) side is made up of mostly road access cottages. Some cottages on the South side remain water access only, but ongoing construction efforts are making new inroads into the area.
The Severn River is 30 km long and is home to the Swift Rapids lock to the South East (Lock 43) and the Big Chute Marine Railway lock to the North West (Lock 44). The Severn River flows in a northwest direction from lake Couchiching and lake Simcoe, to Gloucester Pool and Georgian Bay.
The river is a small part of the Trent Severn Waterway, a historical river system used by loggers and industries to transport goods throughout central Ontario.
